Its primary focus is harnessing space technology for India’s development and conducting space research and exploration. Globally, ISRO is recognized as one of the leading space organizations.

Background of ISRO

ISRO’s roots trace back to 1962 when the Indian National Space Research Committee (INCOSPAR) was founded under the guidance of Jawaharlal Nehru and the visionary scientist, Vikram Sarabhai. By 1969, it evolved to become ISRO. In 1972, India also set up the Space Commission and the Department of Space (DOS), which now oversees ISRO’s functions, reporting directly to the Prime Minister of India.

Key Centers of ISRO

ISRO operates through several specialized centers across India:

  • The Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad handles sensors and payloads.
  • The U R Rao Satellite Center in Bangalore is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing satellites.
  • Launch vehicles are crafted at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island, near Chennai, serves as the primary launch site.
  • Master Control Facilities for geostationary satellites are based in Hasana and Bhopal.
  • The National Remote Sensing Centre in Hyderabad oversees the collection and storage of remote sensing data.
  • Antrix Corporation, ISRO’s commercial branch, is headquartered in Bangalore.

Milestones and Future Endeavors

Throughout its journey, ISRO has achieved numerous milestones:

  • It has launched various satellites for diverse purposes like telecommunications, weather forecasting, and resource monitoring, including the INSAT and IRS satellites.
  • The satellite, Aryabhata, was ISRO’s debut, launched in 1975 by the Soviet Union.
  • In 1980, India’s indigenous launch vehicle placed the Rohini satellite into orbit.
  • ISRO has crafted rockets like the PSLV (for polar orbits), GSLV (for geostationary orbits), and the more powerful GSLV Mark III.
  • They have spearheaded significant missions, including Chandrayaan-1 (2008) to the Moon, Mars Orbiter Mission (2013) to Mars, and Chandrayaan-2 (2019).
  • Successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on south pole of Moon. First in the world to do that.
  • ISRO has set its eyes on sending astronauts to space by 2025.
